About the Festival
Underbelly Arts: The Festival – July 16, 2011
Come to Cockatoo Island this July 16 to explore the new works of some of Australia’s freshest creative talent.
Watch as over 150 theatre-makers, installation artists, musicians, sound artists, dancers, inflatable artists and performers show off the fruits of their collaboration at our Festival day extravaganza.
This is your chance to experience some of the most exciting, innovative and experimental works coming out of Australia, all in the incredible surrounds of Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour. You can explore on your own or go on a tour, watch a show, get lost in an interactive installation or relax to some great music with a drink in the Festival Bar.
Download Festival Schedule PDF. Go to our Artists page and read about all of the fantastic projects you’ll be seeing on the day.
Visit our Getting There info page to plan your day and find out ferry times.
Doors open 12pm
Performances from 1pm
Festival close: 10pm
Disability access
Cockatoo Island has wheelchair access and disabled toilet facilities. Most areas of the Festival site are wheelchair accessible, though keep in mind that the island is an industrial heritage site so some of the surfaces are uneven and some buildings on the island are not accessible by wheelchair. There is one quite steep incline from the lower island to the upper island. Cockatoo Island wharf is not formally classed as accessible as particular tidal conditions occasionally make the ramp between ferry and wharf unsuitably steep for wheelchairs. However, this is unusual, and subject to these conditions.

Can you buy alcohol on the island?
Jul 16, 2011 @ 10:51:07
Yes, alcohol is for sale at our Festival Bar. We have a selection of beers, wines, cider and even a delicious mulled wine to warm the cockles of your heart as you wander the site.

The weather is looking awful- are there many sheltered areas on the island?
Jul 15, 2011 @ 14:07:01
Most of the installations and performances are indoors. Some of the pathways between venues are not under cover, and there are a few performances set to be outdoors if the weather holds up. Bring a raincoat just in case!

Can I bring a picnic with a bottle of wine?
Jul 13, 2011 @ 11:45:21
Hi there, no alcohol can be brought to the island unfortunately – but you can still have a picnic!
For the comfort and safety of everyone on the island, please follow the Island Etiquette:
* no alcohol to be brought onto the island
* no portable BBQs or lighting of fires
* no smoking in buildings
* do not bring animals onto the island (except guide dogs)
* do not enter construction areas
* camp only in the designated campground
* for safety reasons, do not fish or swim outside the designated swimming area.
Hope that helps!
