Applespiel – Awful Literature is Still Literature I Guess 3
The team behind last year’s hit Snail Piece, are back for Underbelly Arts 2011, with a brand new project to make you think twice before picking up just any old book.
Awful Literature is Still Literature I Guess takes a look at the fantasy, expectation and romanticism we attach to books and the reading experience. A collection of terrible books will be assessed, read from and coupled with personal stories, exploring the rollercoaster ride that is the relationship between fiction and reality, expectation and crappy endings. The performance is a refusal to accept the harsh and mundane reality of these disappointments, and an attempt to create something beautiful from them. Applespiel is a collective of young performers who studied together at University of Wollongong. Formed out of a shared interest in contemporary performance and a collaborative creative process, Applespiel have presented works in a variety of forms for festivals and events throughout NSW and ACT. Their performances are playful, intensely personal, and utilise dynamic relationships with audiences.
